Reading the Animal layer

Animals enter the Atlas as seasonal messengers rather than as wildlife catalogue entries. The swallow that returns, the cicada that emerges, the crane that winters in the wetlands — each marks a threshold in the year that no thermometer reports. Because animals move, they carry information across regions: a species arriving early in one place is evidence about conditions somewhere else. The Atlas treats these arrivals and departures as observations, which is why an animal entity usually connects to a season and a direction rather than to a habitat classification.

Following an animal entity outward leads to the festivals that greet it, the places it passes through, and the concepts — timing, attention, threshold — that make its behaviour legible. The Atlas does not keep a species list; it keeps a record of what returns and when. Read that way, an animal page is less a profile than a date: a recurring appointment with a particular stretch of the year, and a way of noticing when the appointment has been kept.
