Born in Jingling (present-day Tianmen, Hubei), Lu Yu was abandoned as an infant and raised by a Buddhist monk at the Longgai Temple. He left monastic life at age 12 but carried the discipline of mindfulness with him into his secular pursuits. Throughout his life, Lu Yu traveled extensively across China, visiting tea-growing regions from Sichuan (sichuan) to Jiangnan, studying local practices, and recording his observations with meticulous precision.
Lu Yu's magnum opus, The Classic of Tea (the-classic-of-tea) (Chájīng, 茶经), completed around 780 CE, represents the first systematic treatment of tea in world literature. He organized his findings into ten chapters covering the plant's origins, cultivation, processing tools, manufacturing methods, brewing vessels, water quality, drinking customs, historical records, growing regions, and recommended simplifications. His work documents Sichuan's early tea culture in particular detail, recording the varieties, processing techniques, and regional preferences he encountered during his travels. Lu Yu's scholarship built upon the legendary discoveries of Shen Nong (shen-nong), the mythical emperor credited with first identifying tea's medicinal properties.
