The Classic Of Tea

The Classic of Tea (茶经, chá jīng) is the world's first comprehensive treatise on tea, authored by the Tang dynasty scholar Lu Yu (lu-yu) and completed around 760-780 CE. Comprising three volumes and ten chapters, the work systematically covers every aspect of tea: its origins, cultivation, processing, brewing, utensils, and cultural significance. The Classic of Tea is not merely a technical manual but a philosophical work that elevated tea from a medicinal beverage to an art form and a path of spiritual cultivation.

The text is organized into ten sections: (1) Origins (一之源), tracing the botanical and mythological roots of tea; (2) Tools (二之具), listing fifteen implements used in tea processing; (3) Manufacture (三之造), describing the methods of picking, steaming, pressing, and drying tea cakes; (4) Utensils (四之器), cataloging twenty-eight items for tea preparation and service; (5) Brewing (五之煮), detailing water quality, temperature control, and brewing techniques; (6) Drinking (六之饮), addressing the history and etiquette of tea consumption; (7) Records (七之事), compiling historical references to tea from earlier texts; (8) Regions (八之出), surveying tea-growing regions including Sichuan (sichuan); (9) Simplification (九之略), suggesting which tools and steps may be omitted in different contexts; and (10) Illustrations (十之图), recommending that the text be displayed on scrolls for easy reference.

The Classic of Tea established the foundations of tea ceremony (tea-ceremony) and tea brewing (tea-brewing) practice that continue to influence East Asian tea culture today. Lu Yu's insistence on the quality of water, the precise control of temperature, and the meditative attention required for proper brewing transformed tea preparation into a disciplined art. The work codified the relationship between tea and the scholar's Daoist and Buddhist ideals—simplicity, mindfulness, and harmony with nature. The Classic of Tea remains in print after more than 1,200 years, a living text that continues to be studied, cited, and revered wherever tea is drunk with intention.
